Three regional ACOs unite to expand physician-led value-based care
TMA PracticeEdge, LLC and PracticeEdge Alliance ACO, LLC, announced today the launch of a new physician-led commercial accountable care organization (ACO). The group will begin caring for more than 9,000 patients across the greater Houston region in January, 2017.
PracticeEdge Alliance ACO is a joint venture company formed by several physician-led ACOs including Houston Independent Physicians ACO (West Houston), Northeast Health Providers ACO (Kingwood) and Rising Star ACO (Huntsville and Conroe). TMA PracticeEdge, a physician services organization created by the Texas Medical Association (TMA), helped the physician groups launch the joint-venture ACO.
“TMA PracticeEdge helped us develop a network of like-minded, independent primary care physicians focused on improving health care quality while lowering costs,” said Maria G. Berdayes-Bowles, DO, president of Northeast Health Providers ACO. Dr. Berdayes, who also serves as president of the new conglomerate ACO added, “My colleagues and I believe that primary care physicians – our front-line clinicians – can have the most influence on patient decisions that impact their health care. We will educate our physicians about new value-based care models and reward them for their excellent work.”
Tom Garcia, MD, TMA’s immediate past president and president of Houston Independent Physicians ACO, says the TMA PracticeEdge platform is ideal because it allows physicians to clinically integrate while remaining self-employed and independent. He says that is difficult to do in a market dominated by large hospital systems and venture capitalists.
“One of the greatest benefits of utilizing the TMA PracticeEdge platform is that networks of independent physicians operating in solo practice or small group practice can cost-effectively access technology and care management resources needed to excel in value-based care,” said David Prier, MD, a Huntsville-based pediatrician/internist serving as medical director of Rising Star ACO. Small physician practices typically don’t have the capital to get started in this market, he adds.
David Spalding, TMA PracticeEdge chief operating officer says across greater Houston, Texas, and nationwide, networks comprising independent physicians are leading the charge in providing the highest-quality care while generating cost savings under value-based care models. “We look forward to working with and growing these excellent physician-led organizations,” he adds.
